Install A WordPress Blog On Your Computer (Offline)

  • Sharebar

My twin sister tend to be secretive with blog posts.  So it’s not surprising that she has a privacy-enabled WordPress-based blog online.  I completely understand this because blogging is so addictive.  At some point most of us will forget the line drawn between what to say and what not to say.

If you like the idea of blogging but would like to keep your journal entries to yourself for now, a great way to keep a digital diary is by installing WordPress on your computer.  This keeps your blog offline, and for your eyes only.  The best thing about this method is that if you ever build up enough courage to publish your posts online, you can simply upload it to your servers.

#1 – Install Web Server Package

First, you need to install a web server package.  I use wampserver, and it really is awesome.  A web server package installs the latest version of Apache, MySQL and PHP on your computer.  The installation is simple, just like any other software today (double-click icon, agree to license, next button, next, next, completed).  Oh yeah, and it’s 100% FREE. :)

You can download Wampserver here: [DOWNLOAD WAMPSERVER]

Other great FREE alternatives include Xampp and Zend Server Community Edition.

#2 – Create A Database on phpMyAdmin

This is really easy.  Run Wampserver and start all services (they start automatically by default).  Open your browser (e.g. Firefox) and type “http://localhost/phpmyadmin” on the address bar.  The page that loads will have a small input box with ‘Create a database’ next to it.  Input the database name (anything really, e.g. ‘myblog’ or ‘loljournal’, etc.).  You’re done here…for now.  Remember, when you are hosting on a server online you will need to set a database username and password.

#3 – Install WordPress

Here’s the fun part – because WordPress has made it incredibly simple to install their FREE software. :) Download WordPress.  Create a folder in your C:/wamp/www/[create new folder] folder.  Extract the contents of the WordPress zip file and place them into your new named folder, e.g. C:/wamp/www/myblog.

To install, type the following on the address bar: http://localhost/myblog (“myblog” being the newly created folder where all the WordPress contents have been extracted to).

The installer will run automatically.  WordPress creates a configuration file for you during the installation, so it’s all good. :) In earlier WordPress versions, this had to be done manually.

And you’re all set! You can visit your blog at http://localhost/myblog. :)

I couldn’t cope without my Xampp server, it is just brilliant for testing websites out without messing up your live site. Good to see others out there using these things for different purposes though, i never thought of having an offline journal.
