My most recent web layouts have zero gloss. Zero gloss because this web 2.0 design fad has been well over-used; just like Photoshop’s default levels of bevel and emboss, and default levels of drop shadow. Why are they out? Because they won’t stand the test of time. Go ahead, try it. Look at these glossy sites for several years…eventually you will wish they were one plain colour or a mild gradient.
It’s amazing how the design trends just change over time. These days, logos are 3 dimensional and that’s been an in-thing for quite a while now. But how long will this fad really last? The only thing to do is to look at companies that have been online for decades, e.g. Microsoft, Yahoo, MSN, etc. Their logos are all very simple and has barely changed over the many years. Even Google has opted for simplicity (minus the colourful fonts that work because they are trendsetters).
Facebook’s got it right though; they usually always do. They started with a very simple and classic design, and they got it right the first time. Very light colours, and simplistic. This is what the web 3.0 designs are for me. This is what the trend is right now and what the trend will be for a long time. Simple designs that last forever.
