Earlier I was chatting with a friend about my plan to take some time on July to learn PHP. As we discussed projects that we might want to build after that (or during) I started wondering why I actually wanted to learn the language. At the moment, I have basic PHP knowledge. What that means is that I can build very simple websites using PHP, and I can also find my way through the codes while theming or making simple edits.
That said, I am very comfortable with Joomla, WordPress and Drupal. I can build complex websites using third-party addons, components, modules, etc. I suppose it will be useful to learn PHP so I will have more control over the sites I build especially if I want to customize them further. Or at least I think that’s what’s going to happen.
In a way, it’s sort of like building an HTML/CSS website using Dreamweaver’s WYSIWYG feature. Someone who knows how to do this well believes that they know how to build a website and they can. But if you know how to actually handcode using HTML and CSS you will understand the limitations of WYSIWYG. I wonder if this is similar to PHP?
With PHP comes the MySQL database…which seems a lot more simpler to understand.
