Web Developer Confidentiality

  • Sharebar

Today, a potential client raised confidentiality concerns and I reassured her that any idea she throws at me will not be discussed beyond the office.  I’ve been working in the company for almost 10 whole months now and this is the very first time someone has approached me with this issue.  I’m actually very glad that it’s something she had the courage to inquire about.  Many don’t.

Last week, I was talking to someone who wanted to build his own website.  He didn’t know much about how to build one but he couldn’t find it in his hear to trust a developer so he wanted to start learning how to build his site.  He didn’t even want to share the basic features he would like his website to have so I couldn’t help him at all.  The only thing I advised him was to try using PHP or asp.net instead of HTML.  I wonder where projects like that end up?

2 weeks ago I was talking to another client while working on his computer.  He told me that he believes everyone should stick to what their good at or they will end up being a ‘jack of all trades; master of none’.  This is very fitting for the situation last week.  Perhaps I’m old-fashioned and just prefer being trusted with ideas that I can develop on for the clients.

This confidentiality thing is innate for me.  Notice how I’ve never mentioned projects I’m working on for clients? It’s not something I would publish on my blog and definitely not something I would share with other people; especially those that might steal the idea that I’ve been entrusted with.

Anyway, it’s just something I wanted to briefly state.  You can’t trust every developer out there; but once in a while you’ll find a developer you can trust.
