10 Things You Can Obtain From A Simple Domain Name

  • Sharebar

I actually do mean ‘information’ or ‘data’ than ‘things’, but how do I even put that in a title? :D So here are a few things you can know about a domain name, just by knowing the domain name~ :) We can obtain such data through web tools available on some websites.  I can’t guarantee their accuracy, but they can give us a close estimate.

1.] HISTORY

Before you consider buying a domain name, you might want to look into what it was before.  That can give you an idea on how you want to continue developing the domain name; or if its past can potentially affect its future.  An excellent web tool is the WayBack Machine available on www.archive.org.  One of the best feature of this tool is that it has archives of the website including cached pages on a timeline.  Check out Google’s archived pages.  You even get to view how the page has developed over the decade, its first recorded archive is November 11, 1998.  You’ll notice though, that Google doesn’t really change much. :D The really interesting one is Yahoo.com and MSN.com, especially if you used to surf the web about a decade ago.  Lots of beautiful changes, and they have really moved past the HTML era in a lot of ways.

2.] OWNER, 3.] REGISTRAR/WEBHOST 4.] REGISTRATION DATE 5.] EXPIRATION DATE

A quick visit to www.who.is will answer the above.  For example, this website:

Who Is Domain Name Information

Who Is Domain Name Information

If you scroll down to the same page, you will be able to see more information regarding its registrant, etc.

6.] PAGE RANK

If you’re into search engine optimization and you believe that page rank holds some value to the domain name, a recommended page rank checker would be PRChecker.info.  It really is one of the best out there.  But if you have the Google toolbar installed for your browser then you can obtain that piece of information directly from the toolbar.

7.] GOOGLE INDEX

As long as your site is not banned from Google, it should be on the Google index especially if you allow crawlers.  If your site has a lot of pages, then the more pages you have index is a positive thing.  This is simple to find out.  You only need to type in “site:sabrinasabino.com” and you will see how many of your website’s pages has been indexed on Google.  If your domain name is new, it should not have an pages indexed.  But if it’s got some history, or some content, then there might be some results.

8.] BACKLINKS

There are some really good backlink checkers online today, such as iWeb Tool’s backlink checker or the one from Backlink Watch.  If you’re going to buy a domain name that has been previously owned, its price might be considerably higher than reg fee if it has a good number of valid dofollow backlinks.

9.] POSSIBLE VALUE (VALUATION)

Only YOU know the true value of your domain name.  That said, a great tool out there made by experts in the field is Estibot.  I’m not sure what algorithm is used, but if I’m not mistaken it does consider search engine information as well…

10.] POTENTIAL INCOME

The final web tool I’m recommending today is from DNScoop.  If you enter a domain name, they will deliver the age of the domain, it’s PR, visitor stats, potential income through ads, and possible valuation of the website considering the mentioned values.  The issue I have with this site is their PR info…there must be some sort of bug that they have not fixed because it used to work fine.  But lately PR info is not appearing for me, so I don’t use this site as often anymore.
