Some of the most interesting family trees are definitely found here in Seychelles, especially where racial mixing is concerned. A project I’ve always wanted to work on is completing my family tree, with pictures and accurate data. But recently I was talking to a friend of mine who has also been doing some research on her family tree.
I asked her what her opinion was about my starting a family tree database for the country. She told me that it might be a good idea because there are many people overseas who would want to know more about their family here or for whatever reason they would like to know who’s related to whom.
The Seychelles National Archive were supposed to have everything copied from paper documents to their electronic version. But I don’t really know how far along they are with that. But that said, family tree is an ongoing thing, with people having kids and their kids having children and so on.
Interesting enough this particular friend of mine has a relative that married my grandfather’s sister. So we already have a joining family tree. Several years ago I uploaded my family tree online for all to see but my elder sister was not too happy about that because she was concerned with privacy. She also told me that a family tree should stop right after the person gets married (i.e. you do not continue with e.g. the person’s husband’s sisters or parents, etc.
So I suppose what I really want to work on is a genealogy database. Which explores everyone’s genealogical connection with everyone else. So that would go as far as understanding the links between two people; and definitely go beyond marital links.
Although since I want to keep it to a Seychelles genealogy database, it stops if a Seychellois marries a foreigner. So we won’t explore the non-Seychellois’ side of the family but we will add their children to the database.
I’m going to expect Seychellois themselves to help fill up the database and fingers crossed that some of them are interested. If there are any Seychellois willing to work with me on this project, feel free to contact me.
I have to step out for an hour or so but I’ll think up of the best software to use for this project and I might actually start filling it up with the info I have so far, this evening itself.
