Seychelles has been experiencing a very lengthy dry period recently, this has most likely been the longest drought we’ve experienced so far. Although my friends on Praslin told me that it has been raining regularly there, so I guess Mahe was most affected. That’s the irony of living on an island that is suffering the consequences of drought; we are completely surrounded by the ocean, water everywhere…but I can’t say the same for the limited amount that comes out of our taps. The water restrictions have gone on and on for so long, that it has become a lifestyle for many of us.
It started raining last night, it is past 4pm right now and it is still raining. It has been raining all day. We really do have something to be grateful about. This climatic change is really scary. The huge advantage though, is that we haven’t had the need to trim the grass outside at all, so that saves us some cash.
The trees and grass are starting to turn green again, welcome back chlorophyll! As for mood…I am happiest when it rains. I know some people who get depressed and gloomy in the sombre-ish weather but no, not me. But today, I’m sure everyone in the country is rejoicing. I really hope this continues for a while. A desert-looking island is not a sight for sore eyes.
