Driving Lesson #5: Things Are Getting Serious Now!

  • Sharebar

Yesterday when I asked Mr. R (my driving instructor) what the plan was for today, he said that I would be taking the same airport route I did for 2 consecutive days.  So here I was expecting to make the same route.  When I arrived at Stad Linite 5 minutes late for my lesson, there was a young guy in the driver’s seat and Mr. R was having lunch.  He shouted at me from the car “I said 12:30, you’re late!” and I thought “sh*t”.

Why was I late? I woke up and to my surprise there was barely any water in the taps (due to water restrictions).  I didn’ t expect there to be very little water.  So it was definitely my just washing my face and arriving on time, or taking a shower and arriving a few minutes late.  I took a shower (especially because I had to go to town in the afternoon to meet a client).

Anyway, the boy moved to the rear seat and I entered the driver seat.  Mr. R told me that we’re dropping off the guy in town.  So for the first time in my life, I drove to town via the Roche Caiman highway.  I assumed that we were only going to town then I’d turn towards the airport but that was not the case.  Today, my instructor had other plans.  He made me go to North East Point through Anse Etoile.

This route is my elder sister’s favourite route and a route that my twin sister enjoys taking.  I really don’t know why.  Today is the first day I sensed some level of driving stress because the road there was extremely narrow and I had to really keep to my side of the road.  Who would enjoy narrow roads? That, and my instructor just wouldn’t let go of the steering wheel.  I really hope I take the exact same route tomorrow.  I practiced some gear-shifting today, as well as braking downhill.

Tomorrow I will pay for my next 5 lessons.  I asked my sister what the advantages and disadvantages of daily lessons are and she said that the issue with everyday lessons is this: if the instructor has it in mind that most people should take about 3 months to get their license (the learner’s permit states a validity period of 3 months, so most instructors will spend 3 months teaching you how to drive) then I will pay for every single day I learn how to drive within that 3 months which will be a lot more than someone who is only taking 3 days per week.

My initial idea of taking driving lessons daily was to cut that time in half (so I get my license after a month and a half of lessons).  I really hope this time next month I will be close to that.  That said, I am okay with my progress at the moment, and I’m happy with my instructor.  As for the clutch and gear shifting issues I was having yesterday, I got a lot of ‘very goods’ today so yay me…again. :)
