I entered the world of domaining some time around the second half of 2007. Over the years I’ve been more of a collector than a seller, and instead of flipping, I drop domains that I no longer want. I don’t know exactly how many domain names I have at this point. But it could be well over 30. There was a time that I was really into it and I had well over 60, possibly even 70 domain names. But that’s nothing compared to the top players in the industry who don’t do it as a hobby but as a full-time job. They’ve got thousands.
What I hate about this time of year though, is how much money is spent on my dormant domains. I’ve had domains sitting there since 2007 or 2008. That’s almost $10 per domain name. That really sucks. At this point, I also don’t really know what to do with the handful of four-letter domains I’ve got. Should I develop them or should I resell them? I’ve pulled myself out of the domain world for quite a while now, so I have no idea how much four-letter dot coms are at this point. But I’m sure that the hype has pretty much blown over (well, at least for now), so it would probably be wise for me to just hold on to them for a little longer.
Sticking to the topic of four-letter dot coms, I’ve got some that I really like and want to develop. What they should be developed into is the real question. I really want to stick to open source and free resources though. But I’m trying to figure out what I have to offer the world in terms of free resources. This is a sad situation.
I’ll be facing batch renewals until November I think, so if I sound a little cranky until then, you’ll know it’s probably because I quite dislike spending money in this way.
