A few weeks ago I was really busy with a project so when one of my clients called me up asking me on short notice to help him with a graphics work that day because his graphic designer disappeared all of a sudden, I apologized and declined. He was frustrated, and told me that he was really surprised at people here in Seychelles because we have the privilege of rejecting job and gig offers.
I was defensive, and told him that I would gladly do it if I had some time to work on it, and that he can’t drop something on me all of a sudden and expect me to deliver the same day (especially if I’m working on another client’s project).
Today, I can really empathize with his frustration of living in a country with such a helpless service industry. As a service provider, I know and understand the challenge of being a one-man team or having only two hands and one head. But as someone in need, it’s a whole other story.
Earlier today we tried contacting the Vet’s two mobile numbers and I got the “this number does not exist” error. We even tried SSPCA just in case, and nobody answered the call. You cannot get a vet at this hour. Worst of all, the vet doesn’t have a website or a Facebook page (so I wouldn’t know if they changed numbers), and SSPCA only has their office number.
If my animal was hemorrhaging, I would have to bid farewell to the poor thing. Just like my friend’s dog, who died due to negligence.
This is more or less the same problem we face with human beings. Sometimes some people here are experiencing symptoms that doctors here can’t diagnose so they have to be sent abroad for medical treatment. If the doctors feel that it’s not that serious (they can’t properly diagnose it, yet they will decide if it’s not serious enough for overseas treatment) then the patient will have to stay here and wait for a specialist or have their results sent abroad.
Just a reminder that we are currently paying 15% personal income tax, and some days I don’t know why.
As for my frustrated client, I gave in eventually and helped him with his urgent work and we were able to deliver to the local media on time.
