Thylvethter Is Back From The Vet!

Thylvethter Trying To Get Out Of The Pet Basket

I was quite stressed out this morning because I was having a hard time trying to find transportation to get Thylvethter back home after spending the night at the vet clinic.  The vet had Div’s number so he called her up and told her that the cat is fine and there are no more kittens – basically Thylvethter has lost her first liter.  Anyway, all my friends have some means of transportation: either they have a car or their household has one.  But one of my main friend Ant is a swimming coach for the IOIG and she’s not only really busy with her job right now but she is also living at the Sports Village at Perseverance so I didn’t want to bother her.  We asked Gis, who told us that she was busy with a lot of work so she would only be able to help us out some time around  2-3pm.

I was quite desperate today so I went ahead and asked Ant if her younger brother could help.  She was not replying so I asked my neighbour Anne through SMS.  A few weeks ago when Ant and I went to visit her and her parents I told them about the trouble I had finding transportation to neuter Thyl.  They then offered to help out if they can, if I ever need transport in the future.  I received a reply from Anne a few minutes later, saying “give me a few mins”.

A few minutes later, she was honking her car on the main road so I zoomed out with a box.  We stopped by the Cable & Wireless ATM machine in town, and I withdrew 3000 rupees (almost USD250) because I had absolutely no idea how much the vet fees were.  Let’s not forget: we had to call the on-call vet to the clinic twice last night.  This was Dr. Jimmy Melanie, and he kept his promise last night when he said he’d pass by and check on Thyl.  We know he kept his promise because before we brought Thyl, we told him that her second kitten was also stuck but then eventually Thyl was able to push it out although a little too late.  We later just brought Thyl to the clinic, without updating the vet.  So he called that night telling us he couldn’t find a stuck kitten anywhere.

Anyway, I entered the clinic and saw the small cage Thyl was placed in.  As I peaked in the box she was freaking out and meowing until I said “Thylvethter” out loud and then she looked calm and eager to get out of the cage.  I opened it, removed the bowl of water and was holding Thyl down until the vet arrived.  As soon as Thylvethter heard him coming from the distance she turned around and stayed in the basket…far inside.  He tried to grab her to pull her out but she struggled, then I decided to jump in with a plan because I know Thylvethter well.  I took the box I brought with me and said “come Thylvethter” and she hurried out of the cage and jumped inside the box.  She was very comfortable in there until we left the clinic.

We paid only 225 rupees (about 19USD)! He said “it’s two twenty five” so I had to repeat and ask him “two hundred and twenty five???” Wow.  That’s cheap.  I wonder if he gets paid enough.  He should open his own clinic or something.  Div and I honestly assumed we’d be billed about 2000-3000 rupees for the headache we gave the pet doctor last night.

Anyway, when we brought her back she started cleaning herself.  I entered my room and closed the door.  My door has a specific creak to it, so Thyl ran and started some serious meowing so I opened it and allowed her in.  She started panicking, and looking for her kitten.  My room was where the second kitten died, and before Thyl left for the clinic she saw it and started eating the sac around it.  So she’s aware there was one.  She might have been so tired that she didn’t know it was already dead.  Up until now, she’s still in a confused state, almost like she’s lost something.  I don’t know how long this will take but the vet said that we should expect her to behave differently for a few days.

Printz seemed to have been looking for Thyl earlier before I brought her back.  I read somewhere online that it’s not really a feeling of missing their little friend nor depression, but a feeling of confusion because of the change in hierarchy.  Between the two cats, I don’t know which is the alpha cat though.  Printz has been hissing at Thyl all day, but Thyl isn’t herself still…she’s not bothered about Printz which is odd because before all this she had a thing for picking fights.

This ordeal has taught me four life lessons:

  • Neuter all pets if you’re happy with the number you have.
  • Get a car
  • Sometimes we’ll find a friend in a stranger
  • Sometimes we’ll find a stranger in a friend

I rarely ever ask my friends to help me with something.  I’m not one of those needy types.  I only ever ask for help when I truly need it at a point of desperation.  So I really needed my friends to help me out today and an acquaintance stepped up to the plate.  This was really quite embarrassing for me because you really know who your true friends are in times of need.  This was not a money issue for us, we would have paid for fuel+extra and you could have even charged us for it and we’d have paid you in cash immediately.  But this was really a test of friendship.
