When he came up to greet a few people near me, I heard him speaking on the phone and saying “I was not expecting this…” or something along those lines. So I guess he was not expecting the gold medal, but certainly did a great job. Congrats to Bertrand!

Other participating countries might publish a more detailed account of the games on their sports websites.
