Today is a new day for me. I’ve decided to get off the following meats: chicken, pork and beef. I’ve actually been off pork for quite a while now. Yesterday when we were having lunch with Francisco, he announced that he was a fish-eating vegetarian. It reminded me of the time I did that. I was a fish-eating vegetarian from 16 until 20 or or 21 when I moved to China. In China, they had horrible fish dishes (well, if you’ve had fish in Seychelles you’re going to have a hard time eating fish in China), but they had excellent Chicken dishes. Initially, I hated the change in my diet…that, plus I gained 5 KGs that year! So things will have to change for me now, as I get older and my metabolism continues to fails me.
From today, I really need to be careful about snacking on crackers. I will avoid the meat mentioned above. I will also try to wean off Coke. I found the perfect drink that actually quenches my thirst: cold lemon juice with honey! A good thing about this alternative is that it is low on calories, compared with Coke and it also fills me up faster – one mug is all it takes. Another advantage with this drink is that it is cheaper: a jar of honey costs about 30-40 rupees, which will last several weeks. A bottle of concentrated 100% lemon juice is about 17-18 rupees, and I think that will last a week or a week and a half. A bottle of Coke costs 13 rupees, so my having 2 of that a day already takes enough cash off me. Coke also stains the teeth, lemon with honey does not. The best thing about this change however, is the benefits of the alternative drink. Honey and lemon is great for the body, and Coke is not. This drink tastes a lot like the Bitter Lemon drink, minus the fizz. Which is fine because I hate fizz with bitter lemon. So it works out for now. The aim is to not get fed up of the drink.
