Facebook is important for networking; after all they wouldn’t call it ‘social networking’ if it had nothing to do with networking…and because company owners are people who socialize, it might be beneficial on a professional level too. I don’t see myself deleting nor deactivating my Facebook account any time soon but over the past few months I’ve become quite bored of Facebook.
A few days ago, one of my online friends had written ‘Facebook is boring now’ as his status message. What did I used to do on Facebook that I don’t do anymore?
The first phase of Facebook becoming a daily thing was the (fluff)Friends app. You could pick a fluff, name it, buy stuff for it, hunt for Easter eggs, trade with others for limited edition stuff, decorate your fluff’s home or environment, feed it, pet it, race it with other people’s fluffs, etc. It was fun for a while, in fact almost 2 years or so. Eventually, there were more and more items, more and more limited items, to the point where there were just way too much limited items and nothing was special anymore. It was difficult to keep track of what I had, and what I didn’t have. So it remains dormant on my Facebook account.
I never entered the Farmville fad, nor any other game after this. I started coming back on Facebook for the quizzes. It was fun because some of them were funny e.g. how old will you be when you have your first child (and if you get an age that you’ve already passed), or how will you get murdered, etc. There were also some fun show-off quizzes and games, e.g. click rate, anagrams, etc. where your friends who have participated are shown on a highscores board for all to see.
My third Facebook addiction phase was when I started uploading my personal photos of parties or hangouts with friends and everyone would comment. This has been quite recent actually…the past year or so.
But now it’s all just quite boring. I visit Facebook to see what my friends are up to, but most of my friends are starting to abandon Facebook so I don’t really care much about it anymore. That, and I don’t seem to have a lot of common interests with anyone on my buddy list.
The only ‘problem’ is that most of my MSN chat friends have actually moved to Facebook, so I don’t see anyone leaving that any time soon. It’s the reason I stuck with MSN for so long…because most of my friends were on it. But now that they are on Facebook I’ve stopped chatting with them. But this is not really that big a problem because many of my main chat buddies on MSN messenger were just chat buddies…people who I don’t really know in ‘real life’.
There’s still Skype, Gtalk, and of course SMS texting…which keeps me away from Facebook chat. It’s probably the worst IM out there IMHO because if your connection goes bad for a split second, you will appear offline to the other person and you’ll receive the message on your personal inbox. As opposed to MSN’s offline chat, that allows you to receive the message instantly when you log back on.
According to Alexa‘s traffic stats, Facebook’s visitors are constantly increasing. This is also backed-up by Compete.
So I do find it rather strange that some people can keep themselves so entertained, although I would like to know what exactly are they up to on Facebook so I can do something on there when I don’t have much to do.
