Pierre de Fermat Google Doodle August 2011

  • Sharebar

Google has come up with another excellent doodle, finally something I don’t understand.  It commemorates the birthday of Pierre de Fermat (17th August, 1601) a French lawyer and an “amateur mathematician”.  I have absolutely no idea what the equation is about, I haven’t done any kind of math for over 12 years now and I need a calculator to do simple equations.

When you hover over the doodle graphic, you will come across this sentence:

“I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this theorem, which this doodle is too small to contain.”

I’m guessing there’s some sort of humour to it though.

Here’s a short Youtube video about it (although it basically just describes the doodle like I have on this blog):

According to some sites, the humour is associated with Pierre’s Last Theorem, you can read more here.
