Move aside Somalian pirates, the biggest news recently is about the two incidents of shark attacks where two tourists were killed. One was a French diver, which happened a few weeks ago and the other was a British honeymooner (Ian Redmond) who was attacked several days ago. Both unfortunate incidents occurred at Anse Lazio on Praslin. Anse Lazio is supposedly one of the most beautiful beaches in Seychelles, and also said to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. During my most recent visit to Praslin, we went to Anse Lazio twice: the first time was at night, and I event went into the water to fetch a pail of water (
) for my friend’s 5 year old child who was building a sand castle in the dark. My exact thought at the time was “man…there better not be a shark in here…” I’m serious! The second time was the afternoon after, and there were so many people on the beach, there were so many children swimming in the ocean.
That’s why it boggles me how is it that tourists were the targets of these attacks? There are more Seychellois swimming at Anse Lazio than there are tourists. Not that I would want anything to happen to a local, but perhaps it what a tourist would wear on them that makes them so attractive to these sharks. Maybe this particular shark (and yes, I’m assuming it’s the same one aggressive shark who killed both tourists) has a dislike for sunblock lotion. Haha. You know how tourists always have sunblock on them? It’s one thing Seychellois never wear to the beach.
On a serious note though, my sister says it’s possibly the climatic change that has caused this, as other fish (shark food) has become rare. The British guy was hunted as prey.
Apparently, there is a mobile phone image that has gone viral…someone on the beach took a picture of the British guy right after he got attacked, and according to this picture, large chunks of his leg was gone. Also people…it is uncool to pass around pictures like that, it is disrespectful to the guy’s family who is going through emotional hell right now.
Today’s Nation has published an article in Creole about these attacks. You can always expect the anti-tourism news to be in Creole. Anyway, it says that they have now prohibited swimming and other water-related activities on these beaches. These beaches are: Anse Lazio, Anse Georgette, Petite Anse Kerlan and Grande Anse Kerlan, Saint Pierre island and around Curieuse island. The Briton was attacked about 15 metres away from the coast. It is also said to be the sharks’ breeding season and this is when they are most aggressive.
