Driving Lesson #18: Parallel Parking

  • Sharebar

I don’t really know what happened last week that I was only able to drive a few times.  I will be prioritizing on my driving lessons this week because my instructor wants me to take the off-road test this Friday.  It’s something you can do only on Fridays and I don’t want to have to delay my driving license (my permit expires some time next month).  So this week, if a meeting comes in the way of a driving lesson I will have to postpone the meeting.

Anyway, today I did the final exercise in preparation for the off-road test.  It’s a parallel parking exercise.  I basically have to drive close to a white line and align the car before reversing.  Then I reverse, slowly move right into a yellow box of parking space.  Although this is a very tricky ordeal in real life.  I don’t see myself doing any kind of parallel parking any time soon, even if I get my hands on a car.  When I think of parallel parking I think of places like the Pirates’ Arms road right in front of the entrance.  If I had to parallel-park into something like that I would hold-up the cars behind me.  That would be very funny.  Man, I’d piss the shizz out them wouldn’t I? Heheh…

Tomorrow I’ll be practicing the off-road exercises again (that’s what I’m told).  They’re not difficult but the key thing to remember are all those ‘points’.  If I can remember all these points and indicators, I will be able to pass that test.  Today, I accidentally looked at the left mirror while reversing, instead of looking at the right mirror.  I had to ask my instructor “okay what exactly am I looking for, because I can’t remember…?” and that’s when he said “your right mirror Sabino!”.  Ugh.

But today, I was actually watching someone do their cones (first exercise) and the person dragged a cone 10m away from where it was.  Heheh…imagine if that was an animal.  Seriously? If I bumped a cone (knock on wood) I’d stop as soon as possible.

It’s also good practice doing these exercises with the other learners doing theirs around you.  I had to practice the cones and I was driving behind a person who was driving extremely slow.  They also stopped right before they reversed back to the ‘start line’ so I had to wait for a few minutes and so I put the gear on neutral and took my foot off the clutch.  All these without my instructor around.  I know it’s nothing to people who have been driving for years or people with a driving license.  But these are small initiatives for learners.

After the off-road test I will be practicing for the on-road.
