Last night I officially chucked away my Nokia 5530 because it’s dead. I don’t know when I’ll get it fixed but I’ve decided to just move on from it for now. I went to Cable & Wireless to get a new sim card for my mum (she lost hers) and asked them for their cheapest phone. The Alcatel OT-208 was in stock for SCR 300, so I decided to get myself one for my other number.
For a $25 phone, I can tell you that it’s not that bad. In fact, it’s kind of ‘vintage’ in a way. Most of my phones have had multimedia capabilities (memory card, video, camera), etc. so it’s quite interesting that this phone is just a phone. It’s incredibly lightweight and portable.
It’s got 2 games (F1 Race and Copter), simple organizer, stopwatch, alarm, calculator, converter, torch and something quite new to me: “fake call”. It’s got FM, and it comes with a recharger and earphones.
This is officially my backup phone. If I got it for 300 rupees, there’s no point in reselling it for anything.
I’ve already made a call using it, and I was able to make the call from the comfort of my own bedroom (which is not something I can do with my Nokia phone).
That said, some cons: I can tell you that this phone is not text-message friendly. It’s got limited punctuation marks (that, or I can’t find them) and the buttons are ‘bouncy’ like jelly which is the worst for texting. Everytime I click on it, it literally makes a ‘click’ sound.
Also, the screen is very small compared with what I’m used to. So it’s not really that easy on my eyes. I’ve had one other Alcatel phone in the past…about 10 years ago…that was the last time I had a phone with such small screen.
But it’s alright. This phone will be carrying my fixed line sim card, which I use to make calls and text a bit. My other phone (Nokia C7) carries my prepaid, which is what I use for texting also but mainly GPRS to control costs.
