China’s Great Wall Vs. India’s Taj Mahal

  • Sharebar

Both are wonders of the world and I’ve always wanted to see India’s Taj Mahal.  Next month I’ve decided to take a 3-week break abroad and I’ve been pondering on whether the vacation should be to visit China or India.

Something I really dislike is to spend money holidaying at a country that I’ve already been to.  So you can only imagine my thoughts on revisiting China.  I’ve also already been to Beijing.  However, I was in Beijing for only half a day, and I’ve never really been around the city.  So I’ve never checked out places like the Great Wall or the Forbidden City.  I hear the nightlife is fabulous so that’s something I would also like to experience.

There’s also been this ongoing debate on Beijing being a better city than Shanghai (obviously most people who have lived in Shanghai comme moi will find that hard to believe) but I’ve yet to give Beijing a try.  That said, my younger brother will be completing his A’Levels this year and we have sort of promised him a trip to China so there’s no better time to experience the place.  During late November and mid-December, most parts of China will be entering their winter season.  So it would be pretty cool for someone from the tropical Seychelles to experience some form of winter.  Although it normally only snows from late December onwards so we might have to jump on to Harbin if we want to see a winter wonderland in mid-December.

Nothing beats hanging out with family during the Christmas season, I haven’t spent Christmas with my family for over 5 years.  In fact if I count, it’s actually from December 2004.  Although ironically, I will be in Seychelles this Christmas and my whole family will not.  I don’t know why I bother.  But someone’s got to feed the cats right?

Okay, so there’s that.  Then there’s India.  India has always been an intriguing and mysterious place for me.  I’m sure I would want to carry my camera everywhere I go because there will be all kinds of new sights to see.  Although there are many Indians living in Seychelles, being emersed in their culture and language for a few weeks will be a new experience.  I will undoubtedly learn new things also, and I will be able to count that as a new country on my travel map.

My friend Satinder has also offered free boarding at his place while I’m at his home city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat.  So I won’t have to worry about accommodation while I’m there, except for when we visit Taj Mahal which he’s promised to take me to.  We’ll have to take a plane though because it is located in Agra.

How awesome would it be to visit India? That’s like one of my dream destinations.

That said, I will have to drop the India idea for now because family and familiarity comes first.  Although I have to promise myself that this will be the last holiday I spend in a familiar country.  Next holiday will have to be India, assuming the invitation still stands.
