Adobe Photoshop is widely used in a myriad of digital applications, but did you know that it’s also useful when it comes to designing the color scheme of your home environment? Using a few simple tricks with this photo-editing software you can gain perspective on just how things would look if you made drastic changes to your home. Knowing how to use Photoshop to test new paint colours in your home gives you the ability to experiment with a myriad of colors and textures without committing or getting covered in lacquer.
First you must obtain a legal, licensed copy of Adobe Photoshop. This is quite an expensive piece of software, but more than worth it. Once you’ve installed and registered it, open a high quality photo of your home environment. A high resolution, wide-angle view of a room in your home is best suited for this task, but if you don’t have a high resolution camera, you can remedy this with how you view your project.
Click the “view” tab and click “fit to screen.” Whether or not the image is of high res. it will open to a large enough photo for your to work with adequately.
Right click the image and then click “duplicate layer.” This creates a second mirrored image of the photo you’re using, only it is directly layered above it. Now, click the icon on the right-bottom side of the Photoshop program screen that says “top layer.” This brings the top layer active for you to work on in the program.
Select the “magic wand” tool from the far left of the screen. Click a wall on the top layer of your image. It will immediately highlight a section of the wall. Drag your mouse throughout the wall area, around other objects. Hit the “delete” button on your keyboard. You won’t notice at first, but this removes the wall from the top layer.
Click the icon to the far right-bottom of the screen that says “bottom layer.” This makes the bottom layer of the image active for your edits. Click the “image” category at the top of the screen, which opens a drop-down menu. Select “hue and saturation” from this menu. This opens the hue and saturation work box, which features a series of sliders. Don’t mess with the saturation slider unless you want the bottom layer of your image to be black and white.
Click the “hue” slider and drag it across the spectrum until the wall in the bottom layer of your image turns a different color. As you do this, the total image will change with the rest of your photograph remaining the same as only the colors of the walls change. This helps you determine what colors look good in your home on your walls.
