Recently, I’ve been quite bored with Facebook and my younger brother has actually told me the same thing. I’ve had visitors landing on my blog page with searches like ‘bored of Faceook’ and ‘Facebook is boring’. As I lie on my bed and compose this post (old-school), I want to come up with a few reasons why people are probably bored with Facebook. Especially members who have been on the social networking site for quite a while now.
1 – It’s Not A Dating Site
This is the way Facebook generally works: you add people you know already know first, and then you add people who are suggested to you or people you find on friends’ contact lists. But most people are so stuck on privacy now so most will not add you if they don’t know you…well, can we blame them? FB encourages you to upload you whole life on it; your education info; job; activities, private photos; family links, etc. so what do you expect?
2 – The Addictive Games Are Spammy
This wards off many from actually getting involved. You receive a few hundred invites from a group of people…it annoys you because it’s all over the place. So to avoid annoying people on your contact list, you just choose to stay away from the games. The games also tally up scores and compares you to your friends who are way better than you at the games. Nobody wants to be a loser let alone a loser in the eyes of everyone you know in your life.
3 – It’s Too Routine
Let’s face it, it all gets really boring after a while: you log in, you read everything, comment on as many statuses as possible, like everything, view pics, upload a new profile pic, and then leave.
4 – Private Messages Have Killed All The Fun
For me, it probably started when FB emphasized on the use of private messages. It’s like email except it’s somewhat different…social emailing? Emailing in a different environment? So it’s made me wonder: why post on someone’s wall when I can private message them directly? If I post on their wall does that mean I want everyone to read the message? This has made writing on someone’s wall less appealing. This has also made other people’s walls less interesting.
5 – People Reveal Their Annoying Side On FB
The annoying people types on Facebook sums this up perfectly. People really reveal their not-so attractive personality traits on Facebook. I’m sure we’re all guilty of this once in a while.
6 – Lacks Relevant Objective
Recently, I’ve started using FB as a way to network with collectors. I was glad in a way because finally I had a purpose on FB. Unfortunately, a friend of mine made me aware that he could read everything I was writing; e.g. items I collect, items I swap, etc. So I’ve stopped using FB for that kind of networking. I imagine if I used it to find a date in a singles group. Everyone in my list would find out! What’s the point then?
7 – Too Darn Complicated!
I believe, if my mum can’t use it then it’s not user-friendly. After all, user-friendliness should be tested on people who aren’t really computer-literate. It should be THAT easy for your average Joe to figure out. Facebook privacy settings and options are too complicated. Heck, sometimes even I get lost with all the menus and sub-menus and all the sub settings inside the settings. Whatever happened to account settings being in one page?
Well, that’s 7 reasons. It’s 3am in the morning so I’m sure I’ve missed out a few. I’m going to bed now. If anyone reading this can think of any other reason that would make anyone leave FB, feel free to add on to the list by leaving a comment below.
Thanks!
