My Experience With Halloween

  • Sharebar

In Seychelles we do not celebrate Halloween.  It’s not in the culture, nor tradition.  In recent years however, there have been a growing number of Halloween-themed events such as discos, parties, etc.  Some stores might offer Halloween discounts or sales (this is quite rare but it happens).  As far as I know, that’s pretty much it.  I’ve never attended a Halloween party here.  I’m guessing that the only people who actually celebrate this here are the American and / or Western expatriates, others who have international exposure  and those influenced by the countries that celebrate this annual ‘holiday’.

The whole ‘trick or treat’ thing I see in US movies seem like a lot of fun though…especially the treat part.  It would be really cool if we had that in our culture…especially for the sake of neighbourhood bonding and the sharing of treats.  But I highly doubt its feasibility here.

The first and only Halloween party I attended was during my first year in Shanghai and it was organized by an American classmate of mine.  I wasn’t going to attend it especially because I didn’t have a costume.  But a Chinese friend of mine urged me to take him because he wanted to make some foreigner friends so I did.  Someone at the party asked me what I came as and I said “hello? I’m supposed to be a prostitute” and that got a bit of laughs so they went on with their lives.  I wore a simple top and jeans.

I wasn’t much into Halloween so I made the conscious decision of disregarding every other Halloween day there.  As the years progressed, Halloween became more and more of something that even the Chinese celebrated.  In 2009, Shanghai had its first ‘American Haunted House‘…I really wanted to go check it out but somehow I just didn’t make time for it.  It was my final Halloween in China and I did plan on doing a lot of things that day.  I was invited to 2 parties and then I wanted to go see that Haunted House.

That evening I decided to get an early nap hoping to make it out in time to meet Heady for the haunted house, Byron for his house party and {someone else} for a party + club event.  When I woke up, it was past 11pm and I decided to just go back to sleep.  I didn’t actually have a costume for that night so I wasn’t really bothered about missing the events.  I considered buying some gear online, then I changed my mind.  I couldn’t imagine having to put myself through the shame of riding the train wearing a witch or vampire costume.
