My mum will have to go for oral surgery on Thursday. A few months ago when my mum was in Singapore she sent me an email telling me that she had a serious toothache and she wanted to get it checked. But somehow I suppose she never really got round to doing that. The other day she felt some pain (but very little) and her jaw was swollen. So I told her to go to the hospital or dentist to get it checked. She refused. I had no choice but to tell her a friend of mine had told me that his mother went through the same thing: she had a toothache, and then it progressed into fever and then rashes. She was sent abroad for checkup because the doctors and/or dentists here couldn’t figure out what to do. A week later, she died. My mum decided to cancel her previous engagements and go straight to the hospital this morning.
It was so weird because the doctor examined the area of the tooth and gums, and he told her that she required immediate surgery. However, they found out that while giving birth to my twin sister and I she endured hemorrhage and so they postponed surgery for Thursday. She’s going through some medical tests now, e.g. ECG, blood tests, etc. She also just found out that she has high blood pressure. She really has been stressed out lately.
The scary thing about all this is that she will have to be anesthetized during surgery. Here are a few answers from Yahoo Answers concerning tooth abscess:
If a tooth abscess goes untreated, what damage can it do?
First, the tooth goes dead and you feel no more pain. After having a lot and then no more is bad, because the tooth is being eatin away by decay. Because of this your tooth becomes very soft and crumbles away. If this happens and you don’t get the tooth extracted (which will become very difficult and painful afterward) the gums can grow over the decayed root traping the roots underneath AND the infection. Once this happens and you still don’t get an extraction (called Root Removel Surgery, which some General Dentist choose not to do if too difficult, and can cost you 4x if you go to an oral surgeon because the use General Anesthesea which puts you to sleep and that in itself costs the most) the infection will spread through the nerve that travels along your jaw infecting other teeth along the way, destroying them, THEN the infection gets in the blood stream which can kill you. An abcess can be treated with and antibiotic which can cost you as little as $5 for simple penicillin and $25 for something to replace penicillin if you are alergic. Then you need a RCT if your tooth is still intact, or and extraction. Better that dieing right? How long after noticing a tooth abscess, does it lead to death?
Try to get some insurance. If you still live with your parents which I bet you do then tell them and let them take you to the dentist. Having an abscess if really bad. Because it has tons of bacteria and whenever you swallow, you swallow those down which can actually affect your heart. So having a healthy mouth is having a healthy heart. So go to the dentist! Even if you don’t have insurance, they can help you set up a pay plan. Your life is more important than getting insurance. Good luck and best wishes to you!
So don’t ignore a toothache, it could be serious!

I hope she get well soon. Once, I had been to dentist for the removal of wisdom teeth, as it was not growing the way it should. It was very painful.
Thank you Heena, that’s very kind of you. Yes, I can only imagine the pain of having a wisdom tooth extracted. My elder sister had to go through that unfortunate ordeal and she couldn’t even open her mouth…she had to eat dinner using a straw. Heheh…I on the other hand…I don’t have wisdom; my wisdom teeth never grew.
