I have no grandparents, they’re all dead. I knew my Seychellois grandparents very well, we lived with them for a few years when we immigrated to this country about 2 decades ago. My grandmother died about 5 years after we moved here, and my grandfather died in 2004. My grandmother knew that she was going to die so it was her who actually planned out everything, from the clothes she was going to wear, coffin style, funeral arrangements (not exact date, but which church, and so on), etc. My grandfather had been ill so we knew he was going to leave us “soon” so it was my mum who planned out everything for him.
We live a very simple life here in Seychelles. Usually, through my personal experience if someone dies then family members and close relatives will contribute in any way to cover the costs. Relatives will gather at the mortuary or wherever the body viewing is held, and distant friends will simply attend the funeral where they will bring flowers and cards. Occasionally, strangers that have heard of the deceased or somehow know what they look like will also attend the funeral just for the sake of being decent.
Some people will announce their condolences on the radio, or the local newspaper.
That’s pretty much it.
