Advantages of a Blu-Ray DVD Player over a Regular DVD Player

Blu-ray media players have a much higher resolution than regular DVD players, making the on-screen picture much sharper and the audio much more intense. A word of caution is necessary. The advantages of blu-ray DVD players are only visible with a HDTV. The HDTV needs to have a minimum of 1080 pixel resolution.

Another advantage of blu-ray media players is that blu-ray discs can hold much more material than a regular DVD so users have access to much more additional footage. Blu-ray players are capable of connecting to the internet, which gives users access to streaming movies from services such as Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, and Blockbuster On Demand. Additional fees apply for the streaming movie service.

What to Look for When Buying a Blu-Ray Player

Look for a good deal. Many blu-ray media players are now below $150 so there is no need to spend more money than necessary. Shop around to make sure you get the best deal possible. Holiday shoppers need to make sure they are buying from a reputable reseller. Try to buy from the manufacturer website or a well-known store such as Best Buy. Buying from a reputable company is the only way to guarantee warranty coverage by the manufacturer. Make sure you choose a blu-ray player that will update firmware so your player always has the newest software.

Types of Blu-Ray Players

1. Portable: Portable blu-ray players are one option. The advantage of portable players is that users can watch their movies anywhere, even at the coffee shop or on vacation. Portable blu-ray players can connect to HDTVs. The battery life is in the range of four hours. Portable blu-ray players allow users to connect their digital camera or camcorder to view pictures or home movies. Many players come with a remote, a wall charger, a car charger and two headphone jacks. Portable blu-ray players are more expensive than home-based players.

2. 3D: The latest in blu-ray technology is the 3D player. The Wi-Fi feature may be built in or the player may be Wi-Fi ready. To enjoy the full 3D experience, one needs a 3D television and 3D glasses. The 3D players offer movie viewing with a resolution up to five times better than a regular DVD system. The 3D player will also play regular DVDs so there is no need to replace your movie collection.

3. WiFi Ready: An advantage of built-in Wi-Fi is that your player can connect to your home wireless network without any extra cables or wires. This player will also let you synchronize many digital devices so that you can access your music and photos on your television.

4. Basic: Basic blu-ray players are all the average shopper needs. Basic blu-ray players offer five times the viewing resolution, plays regular DVDs, allows your computer to stream audio and video files to your home theater system, plays MP3 files, comes with Dolby Digital sound capabilities, a high-speed cable connection and built in flash memory of up to 256MB.
